getting mad (about the wrong things)

Just remembered the Veyle feet drama and I think I've figured out where it fits into infuriating cycles of discussion on the internet. Warning for poor recall of canon two paragraphs down.
Scenario: person comments that her design may (or may not) double as fetish bait. Nothing wrong with this. The problem is when their opponents start attacking the person for even suggesting the possibility, ignoring the fact that the creators have lost the audiences' faith to a degree that gave rise to this critique in the first place. It recalls those lolishota enthusiasts and proshippers that are all like "maybe YOU'RE the predator" as if they're bastions of free thought and their opposition are mindless puritanicals, which is facetious at best.
Moving on to Veyle's situation specifically, I think the creators made the best choices and the alternatives aren't as impactful. The shackles are indispensable to her design. The emphasis on the ones around her ankles most effectively illustrate her struggles, as she is forced to travel on foot to escape her abusers, lacking support and companionship. The impact wouldn't be the same if the emphasis was another part of her body (wrists, neck, etc.), unless a completely new set of visual metaphors was to accompany it.
The shackles being kinda cliche stopped me from properly reflecting on this until now. Once again Engage pulls through.
I can see where OP was coming from, even though they were probably incorrect. It's a similar situation with CF apologists: I see it, you're wrong, and you should be wrong.
